What Is a Child Medical Exam?

Child medical exams are performed by a pediatric provider annually to monitor the child's health and development and ensure they are up to date on all recommended vaccinations. It includes a physical exam and we can also screen for diseases if there is a family history or a concern.

Why Does My Child Need an Exam?

Children need to have an exam before entering into childcare programs or participating in activities with other children. Your child should still have an annual physical for their health even if they are not enrolled in such programs. Scheduling routine physicals also helps your child feel comfortable with their provider and with going to the doctor when they are sick, forming healthy habits that will follow them into adulthood.

What Can I Expect?

The parent or caregiver should come to the appointment with information on the child's medical and family history. Think about any questions you have about your child's health and habits and use this opportunity to talk to a pediatrician about any concerns.

Your child's provider will perform a comprehensive physical exam like a regular physical. We monitor the child's vital signs, height, and weight to help assess their health. This exam could include an inspection of the child's sensitive areas, but it is less invasive than an adult exam and you can be in the room if the child wishes.

At a child medical exam, we may test the child's vision, urine, and blood to screen for health issues we may not find at a regular sick visit.
